Mastercard research: 91% European debit cardholders unaware of SEPA

A recent study commissioned by Mastercard, conducted amongst 3000 debit cardholders in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and the UK revealed that despite the fact that 80% of debit cardholders in Europe want to be able to use their debit cards uniformly across the euro zone, fewer than one in ten are aware that the introduction Sepa in 2008. The study showed support for the concept of SEPA, as 73% favour having their existing debit card replaced by one that can be used uniformly across the region. Regrettably, just 9% of debit cardholders have heard of the initiative. Awareness was highest in Poland, where 29% of respondents were aware of SEPA as opposed to the Netherlands, where just 2% of debit cardholders had heard of Sepa, followed by 3% in France, 5% in the UK and Germany and 8% in Belgium.
