Business Link Offers Guide for Corporates Going Green

Business Link has created a guide designed to help businesses cut costs in the work place, improving their cashflow during these challenging times. After the Carbon Trust revealed that UK businesses could save nearly £7m a day by improving energy efficiency, the company produced the guide to help business owners to identify priority areas for action for saving their well-earned cash.

Erica Russell, a sustainability adviser at Business Link says: “Businesses should take the time to have a look at the guide to see the really simple and easy ways to cut your energy bills, like ensuring that all your staff switch off their equipment when the building is empty.

A Hampshire manufacturer looked carefully at all the equipment being left on in their offices and realised that with just a staff switch off campaign, they could save up to £6,000 a year. It’s also a good idea to take the human element out of switching off. Well-designed automated lighting controls can save 30% on lighting costs. Make sure your heating doesn’t come on when you’re out and remember that for every one degree you reduce on the thermostat cuts your bill by as much as 10 per cent.”

Among the other practical tips offered within the guide are:

  • Encouraging staff to turn off equipment when not in use – a single computer and monitor left on for 24 hours a day will cost £50 or more a year.
  • Using stickers and posters to raise employee awareness of the importance of energy efficiency available from the Carbon Trust website.
  • Switching lighting to energy-efficient bulbs and making the most of natural light.
  • Controlling temperatures (hot and cold).
  • Maintaining equipment properly. A regularly maintained boiler can save up to 10% on heating costs according to the Carbon Trust.
  • Considering investing in new, more energy and CO2 efficient equipment – check to see if you are eligible for an Interest Free Loan from the Carbon Trust.
  • Checking that you are on the right energy tariff and shop around between energy suppliers.
