BBM Mobile Payments Scheme in Indonesia Grows

The BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) mobile money peer-to-peer (P2P) payments service rolled out in Indonesia by local bank PermataBank and software vendor Monitise, has gathered 60,000 registered consumer users since its launch in February.

The mobile payments service, which can be used by sole traders, small business and perhaps eventually larger corporations, depending on the success or otherwise of the BBM Money project, is aiming to get 200,000 Indonesian users by the end of this year. It was introduced as a pilot scheme 90 days ago.

BBM Money allows BlackBerry users in Indonesia to send and receive money seamlessly within a BlackBerry Messenger chat conversation. Users can also top-up any mobile phone and transfer money out to any bank account. The ‘unbanked’ are the primary target audience in the initial stages of the rollout.
