India’s RuPay Completes e-Commerce Deal with Amazon, Jet Airways

India’s RuPay e-Commerce has announced a tie-up with Amazon and the country’s largest airline, Jet Airways, under which customers with RuPay cards can shop on Amazon and book air tickets on Jet for online secure transactions.

“We’re excited to accept RuPay, India’s home-grown entity, on Amazon.in and bring a convenient online shopping experience to RuPay card holders,” said Shri Srinivas Rao, general manager, India Payments, Amazon India. “This is in line with our strategy of offering the widest set of customers a variety of payment options that will enhance their shopping experience.”

Integrating RuPay as an additional form of payment to its customers, Jet Airways has begun accepting RuPay cards on their site for air-ticketing, said Shri Gaurang Shetty, senior vice president – commercial, Jet Airways.

“RuPay with its new PaySecure e-Commerce solution has not only worked towards enhancing customer experience but also embedded security features that are easy to comprehend for the cardholder. We’re glad to offer RuPay as an online payment option to our customers.”

More than 30million RuPay cards have been issued in India and are enabled at all automated teller machines (ATMs) across the country, and can be accessed at point of sale (POS) terminals and over 15,000 online merchants.

Earlier this month RuPay e-Commerce completed a deal with India’s largest online merchants, including the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), flipkart, Snapdeal, bookmyshow and Homeshop18 for online transactions.

India’s online retail industry, as per a Crisil report, has consistently grown over the past five years and is expected to reach 504bn rupees (INR) (US$8.23bn/£5.09bn) by 2015-16 from INR15bn in 2007-08.

However, travel has emerged out as the most transacted segment in the online space accounting for 60% of the digital payments.
