Online payments system PayPal has launched its first web robot, or bot, for users of team messaging app Slack. The bot enables them to send peer-to-peer (P2P) payments with the shortcode /paypal and a user’s Slack handle, so users in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US can send and request money by typing a simple message such as “/PayPal send £5 to @Dave” within the Slack messaging app.
“To get started, install the PayPal bot available on the Slack App Directory. Once installed, link your PayPal account and set your preferred transaction settings, including when you want to review and approve transactions,” advised PayPal. Slack has an estimated 5m daily active users and 1.5 m paying subscribers. The PayPal bot follows the recent launch of Slack Enterprise Grid, a service for large corporations. PayPal itself previously teamed with Square Cash and Venmo last November to allow person-to-person (P2P) payments with Siri.
