Austria Post offers a boost for bitcoin

A partnership between broker Bitpanda and the network means that the virtual currency can be purchased at more than 1,800 post offices across the country.

Bitcoin and three other popular digital currencies – Dash, Ether and Litecoin – can be purchased at more than 1,800 post office locations across Austria, following the formation of a partnership between the country’s Österreichische Post and bitcoin broker Bitpanda.

The partnership enables customers to buy Bitpanda’s paper vouchers in denominations of €50, €100 or €500 at post office counters in Austria. After purchasing, they will receive a code per voucher to redeem for their choice of the four cryptocurrencies on Bitpanda’s website. The service, entitled ‘Bitpanda to go’, is offered exclusively through Post branches.

The Vienna-based broker was founded in October 2014 as Coinimal and rebranded as Bitpanda in June 2016. The company claims to have over 300,000 users currently, with almost €200m in transaction volume and believes that both totals will be increased by the partnership with Austria Post. Its co-founder, Eric Demuth, commented: “Digital currencies will become central points in our daily lives, but they are not in conflict with classical currencies.”
