Sunil Mittal is ICC’s new chairman

The Indian founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises takes over the helm of the International Chamber of Commerce, the world’s largest business organisation with over 6.5m members in over 130 countries.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has been named chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). He was elected as successor to Terry McGraw, chairman emeritus of S&P Global, who becomes ICC’s honorary chairman, in voting by the ICC’s world council held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Bharti Enterprises has interests in telecom, insurance, real estate, hospitality, agri and food, besides other ventures. Bharti Airtel, the group’s flagship company, is world’s third largest telecommunications company by customer base.

Mr Mittal, who has served on the Indian prime minister’s Council on Trade and Industry, said: “At a time when the global economy is facing unprecedented challenges I am committed to ensuring ICC plays a central role as the voice of business in shaping policies to support inclusive growth.”

ICC also named John Denton, partner and chief executive officer (CEO) of Corrs Chambers Westgarth, as the organisation’s first vice-chair. ICC’s World Council elected three new members to its executive board: Anne Veronique Schlaepfer, partner at global law firm White & Case; Kok Seng Vong, vice-president of the Macao Chamber of Commerce; and Philippe Varin, chairman of the board of directors at AREVA.

Separately, the ICC announced the launch of its new trade and investment policy programme in the UK, led by John Carroll, head of product management and international business at Santander UK Corporate & Commercial. The aim of the programme is to influence policy and bring concrete improvements to cross-border trade facilitation and investment, as well as raising awareness of the benefit that international trade can bring to businesses through economic recovery, job creation and sustainable development.
